In a significant development amid the ongoing row, Maldivian Envoy Ibrahim Shaheeb was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday morning. He was seen entering and later exiting Delhi’s South Block. According to reports, Shaheeb had reached the Ministry amid a row over Maldives MP’s post on PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.

Last week, a significant controversy erupted when the deputy minister of Maldives, along with other cabinet members and government officials, made disparaging remarks about PM Modi’s Lakshadweep visit. On January 2, PM Modi shared images of his visit to the Union Territory, including an attempt at snorkelling, describing it as an ‘exhilarating experience.’

How row erupted?

Using the social media platform X, he posted images of the picturesque white beaches, clear blue skies, and the ocean, encouraging adventurous exploration in Lakshadweep. In a post that has now been deleted, Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Shiuna, made a mocking and disrespectful reference to PM Modi. However, the Maldives government, distancing itself from these remarks, clarified that such comments against foreign leaders are “unacceptable” and do not represent the official position of the Maldives government, as emphasized by Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer.
